Role synopsis:
BP’s focal point for digital technology leadership is the Chief
Technology Office (CTO). The CTO provides fast and efficient application
of emerging external technology innovation to group business and functions
requirements, working closely with the business to accelerate the efficient
adoption of new technology and to initiate programs to deploy at scale.
In addition, CTO increases business awareness of operational and growth
opportunities created by new technologies and works to enhance BP’s
external reputation regarding technology and business practices. CTO
activities are focused on technologies that have potential application
across more than one segment or function and support IT&S business
strategies. A primary measure of CTO performance is business adoption
of new digital technologies and innovation. The
Technology Consultant works independently and as part of a well integrated
and supportive team to fulfil CTO’s mission; has wide latitude
for individual initiative; is expected to balance a wide variety of
projects and activities and receives wide exposure to BP business
and IT&S activities. This opening was created by a promotion to
another area of IT&S.
Key accountabilities
• Scans the horizon to identify emerging Information Technology
trends, new products and solutions potentially relevant to all business
segments and functions; assesses potential vendors, consultants and
market segments
• Evaluates new technologies and the potential business impact
through proof of concept trials and facilitates adoption of leading
technologies.
• Acts as the rapid knowledge transfer agent to a wider user
community.
• Helps to identify major “game changing” technology
trends (defined as a material value greater than $50m) and drives
the awareness and adoption of game changers throughout the BP organization.
• Nurtures collaborative relationships with the best suppliers,
consultants, venture capitalists, academics, business practitioners,
industry organizations, government and more, recognizing the value
of securing help from people with the right expertise.
• Addresses difficult business problems by leveraging technical
ecosystem and open innovation to develop creative solutions.
• Provides business projects a fast and direct bridge to the
cutting edge of relevant external information technologies and expertise.
• Promotes awareness of emerging information technologies and
trends among executive management and IT&S organization by designing
and delivering high quality symposia and other events with leading
technology providers.
• Engages in special projects such as the design of new innovation
processes
Essential
criteria & qualifications
• Core IT or technical seasoning for the assessment of technologies
• Ability to rapidly grasp new concepts, achieve a high level
familiarity with new technologies and sense their application; ability
to think at the very forefront
• Effective presentation, persuasion, business relationship
management, networking and teamwork skills
• Ability to provide technical clarity and business direction
to projects
• Entrepreneurial drive and curiosity
Desirable
criteria & qualifications
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in IT or a related discipline.
• A minimum of ten years of experience in the IT industry.
• A minimum of five years of experience working with corporate-wide
IT applications and IT vendor relationship management.
