JOB TITLE:
Medical Assistant
REPORTS
TO: Physicians and Practice Manager on administrative matters;
clinical
supervisor and/or provider(s) on clinical matters
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for the rendering of professional care to patients in
all sites of service in support of
the provider and is directed by the provider. Working directly with
the provider, serves as the
liaison between the patient and the provider for establishing and
maintaining quality patient care.
Works with administrative staff completing superbills, codes, referrals,
future appointment
information and filing. Performs routine laboratory work as directed
by the provider(s) and/or the
clinical supervisor. Maintain clean, orderly exam rooms and laboratory
stations.
JOB DUTIES:
1. Warmly greets patients, vendors and pharmaceutical representatives
immediately. Greeting shall include names and familiarity as often
as possible and an introduction of yourself and your title when greeting
patients.
2. Takes and records routine elements of systemic review; elements
of patient’s history; elements of present illness. Takes vital
signs of the patients, which include vision screening, weight and
measurements, temperature, pulse rate, respiration, blood pressure.
3. Places patient in the examination room and prepares patient for
appropriate examination.
Assists provider with the treatment of the patient in the examination
room and office,
which may include inoculation, both I.M. and I.V., suture removal,
throat cultures, first
aid treatment, ear lavage, hearing tests, nebulizer treatments, pap
and pelvic examinations, breast examinations, and EKG’s, among
others.
4. Assists the provider in procuring laboratory samples, such as venous
blood samples, urine
samples, performs laboratory functions, such as urinalysis, hemoglobin,
hematocrit, and pregnancy tests.
5. Keeps inventory and originates order for medical and drug supplies.
Maintains
organization and stock of pharmaceutical and clinical supplies, including
safe removal of
hazardous wastes according to office policy.
6. Coordinates pharmaceutical detail representatives and procure signatures
from providers.
7. Inventories lab supplies and submits order invoices to the practice
manager.
8. Maintains laboratory equipment and tools in sterile condition.
Keeps laboratory clean.
9. Keeps supplies and instruments clean and stocked in the examination
rooms. Straightens
up examination room subsequent to patient examinations.
10. Autoclaves instruments. Prepares and sterilizes sutures, suture
removal trays. Prepares
and sterilizes all clinical packs.
11. Prepares clinical portion of necessary forms. Makes entries into
medical records in a neat
and legible manner, retrieves information from medical records.
12. Prepares lab order forms, including diagnosis and proper codes
for each test ordered.
13. Secures blood and urine samples for analysis.
14. Performs microanalysis of urine and blood samples as directed.
Sends specific blood
tests to the independent laboratory according to practice policies.
15. Processes cultures according to designated times and temperatures.
Provides preliminary
results to physician.
16. Secures lab area for safety and control of narcotics.
17. Maintains patient medical record in the electronic chart.
18. Assists the provider in patient contact in providing instruction
on routine and minor
medical questions. Shall not provide patient with advice, medical
or non-medical.
